Can anyone explain how Hurricane Earl is expected to break down Fiona?

I've read differing statements. Some say that H Earl will cause Fiona to break down. Others say they will merge. Yet others say that there's never been two Atlantic TS or H of these strength merge. Then I look at the map, and it seems to me that Earl is still going strongly west, and it seems like Fiona would be holding Earl to continue in a westerly path. Can someone sort this out for me? I'm in Virginia biting my nails down to the nibs.|||Actually, if Hurricane Earl and Tropical Storm Fiona merged, then that would be great news. You see, when tropical cyclones get very close to each other, their wind currents interfere with each other. Thus, one or both of these systems will weaken. It's sort of like watching a whirpool form in a bathtub. Twirling your finger in the water close to it (and simulating a nearby hurricane) will cause the whirpool to weaken.

Hurricane models are currently split on what will happen to Fiona. Some say it will remain by Earl's side and continue to stay to its west. Other models predict that Fiona will break out of Earl's shackles and dive into Florida/Cuba.

I live in North Carolina, and I'm watching these storms. BTW, those who say a merger of this type are inaccurate. In 1995, Category 2 Hurricane Iris ripped and absorbed Tropical Storm Karen. Keep in mind that Earl is a Cat. 4 storm, so anything can happen.|||I'm in VA too but i live in cville so they say its supposed to stay out in the Atlantic i dont think its going to get that bad itll be a bunch of rain and wind mostly. go to the weatherchannel.com that's the most accurate site to go to to see whats going on.|||i don't think hurricane Earl will suck in Fiona. Fiona is still too far off from earl. earl will leave cold water behind so that would make Fiona weaken. but look out for Gaston!
