Hurricane earl, which is supposed to be hitting Long Island tomorrow, how long is it expected to last? Like from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm? 10:00 am to 10:00 pm? I'm curious since I have no idea about it. And if you can't give me an approximate answer, can you give me an average time of how many hours hurricanes last? I'm not a pro, and I know nothing about hurricanes.=[|||For one, Earl is not expected to hit Long Island tomorrow. Second, Earl is weakening due to it encountering dry air. It is now a category 2 hurricane. I have a feeling that by this time tomorrow, it may be downgraded to a tropical storm. Current models are showing it moving north east past Nova Scotia late Saturday night.|||The hurricane may last about 8-9 hours. The Long Island landfall will likely be at about 7-9pm Eastern Time.
The storm will be downgraded to Category 1 but sustained winds will likely be in the 70-80 mph range, storm swells to about 8-10 feet (storm surge, of course), and rains will be heavy---1- to 2- inch per hour rains for 7 hours. So not only a hurricane warning is likely for your area...but also a flash flood watch...hurricanes cause about 33-42 percent of flash flooding.
Also be prepared for a few transformers exploding and you know what that means...loss of power, and of course, the hurricane will do a number on trees like a severe thunderstorm does. Uprooted trees and snapped trees that can hit cars, people, and even houses, in addition to snapping power lines.
So, if you are not evacuating, batten down the hatches with at least a 3-day supply of food and backup power (probably a generator) when the hurricane comes.
Good luck!!!|||Hurrican Earl will likely be lose hurricane status and be downgraded to a tropical storm by noon on Friday.|||It's supposed to be one day- one day and 1/4 or 1/2
